St. Louis All Stars losses to Women's National Team 6-0

ST. LOUIS, MO. --- Over 3,000 fans were in attendance on Thursday evening at ABC Park as the USA Softball Women’s National team (44-1) defeated the St. Louis All Stars 6-0. Collecting six runs on six hits, six players contributed one hit a piece while Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo, Calif.) added two RBI. Lefty Monica Abbott (Salinas, Calif.) tossed the shutout moving to 11-0 on tour allowing just two hits recording 11 strikeouts.

The U.S. was held scoreless through the first two innings when the bases became loaded in the bottom of the third inning for the Red, White, and Blue. First baseman Jennie Finch (La Mirada, Calif.) led the inning with a base on balls before Natasha Watley (Irvine, Calif) did what she does best with an infield base hit bunt to put pinch runner Lauren Lappin (Anaheim, Calif.) in scoring position. Caitlin Lowe (Tustin, Calif.) then earned a walk to load the bags before a groundout from Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo, Calif.) plated Lappin for the first run of the game.

A lead off triple from Andrea Duran (Selma, Calif.), her 5th of the tour, jumped started the U.S. offense in the bottom of the fourth inning. A base hit from Stacey Nuveman (La Verne, Calif.) gave the USA a 2-0 lead sending Duran home on the single. But one run was all the home team could muster off of relief St. Louis All Star pitcher Elaine Fisher, who pitched at Southeast Missouri State University.

A Kelly Kretschman (Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.) RBI stand-up double put the third run on board for the U.S. in the fifth. Lowe had an infield base hit to begin before Mendoza reached on a fielders choice with Lowe called out at second. A ground out from Crystl Bustos (Canyon Country, Calif.) pushed Mendoza to second base before Kretschman sent her home with a line drive double to left field and the 3-0 lead.

Nuveman earned a lead off walk in the bottom of the sixth inning and was pinch run for by Laura Berg (Santa Fe Springs, Calif.). Lovie Jung (Fountain Valley, Calif.) then roped her fourth double of the tour but Berg was held at third after the All Star centerfielder tossed in a strong throw to second base. New St. Louis pitcher Karen Macki then tossed a wild pitch plating Berg for the 4-0 advantage before Jung scored on a throwing error by All Star third baseman for a 5-0 jump.

Pinch runner Lappin then crossed home plate on a ground out from the Mendoza for the eventual 6-0 final score.
