Iowa ASA Men's Slow Pitch Classification and Restricted Player Lists

ASA championship play’s original or primary design is a player will choose a team to play for throughout the year and then also play for that team in championship play.  In recent years we have had issues with A and B classification teams either not playing in ASA championship play or playing in the Open A classification.  This has created a situation whereby players from these high level teams have been joining lower level teams to play in ASA championship play instead of being regular players with this team throughout the season.  This violates a key principle of what ASA championship play is designed to be.  In response to criticism of this practice the Restricted Player List concept was passed.

Restricted Player List: Any player on the Iowa ASA Restricted Player List will not be eligible to participate in

championship play below the B level. The classification committee will be responsible for

identifying members of the Restricted Player List.  If a player wishes to be removed from this list they must appeal the State Commissioner and demonstrate that they are a regular player with the Class C team (one of three Class B players allowed) and that they are not playing at the Class B level or higher.

ASA Introduces Slow Pitch Player Database Online

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- The Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) announced today that the official ASA Slow Pitch Player Database is now available online.  In an effort to properly classify teams, the website will continue to be a work-in-progress and contains data from the past five years of championship play.

Click http://www.asasoftball.com/adult/associations.aspx to view the database.

“The ASA feels this database will better maintain the integrity of our slow pitch play,” said ASA Executive Director Ron Radigonda.  “This tool will be utilized to help enforce the ASA Code that was passed in November of 2008 that rates each player.  The combined player ratings for an entire roster then determines the classification that team must play for the 2009 season.”

The website will be continuously updated as more upgrades are completed.  Please check the site on a regular basis as player appeal process information will be made available at a later date. The National Adult Slow Pitch Classification Board will handle all appeals and the five members of the Board will be released at later date.

ACE Coaching Certification Youth Coaching Requirement

The ACE Coaching Certification is now required for at least one Coaches/Team for Teams that participate in Championship Play (State, National Tournaments, National Qualifiers).  We encourage all coaches to take advantage of this excellent coaching training.  ACE Coaches will receive the added benefit of receiving emails and blogs containing helpful coaching tips and coaching advice from Mike Candrea, well known coach of the Arizona Wildcats and former coach of the USA Women’s National Team.  This is also an excellent way for leagues to certify, train and background check their league coaches. For more information.  NOTE - Coaches that are new to the certification and are taking this for the first time will take level one.  Level two is for coaches that are recertifying after taking level one, and each additional level corresponds with another year of recertifying.  Coaches must recertify each year and coaches that have taken level one and no more than two years have lapsed may take level two this year without reverting back to level one.
